"In the work, observing people and contemplating their diversity, dynamics, and beauty is essential. Capturing the plasticity of bodies and faces is a central focus."
Mariia Zhurykova, an artist from Ukraine born in 1988, currently resides in Jávea, Spain. She earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv, where her early work was significantly influenced by both the Ukrainian academic tradition and the Crimean art school, predominantly through oil painting.
In 2015, she moved to Spain to further her studies at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Zhurykova began participating in group exhibitions in 2006 and has since held 13 solo exhibitions. That same year, she co-founded Gudzgallery with her husband, artist Anton Gudzykevych. During this period, her expressive style evolved towards a more abstract and projective approach.
Her work from 2007 to 2020 primarily focuses on the human figure, especially the female form, exploring the fusion of abstract and figurative art. Since 2020, Zhurykova has been investigating the interaction between people and their material and immaterial worlds through the project "Conexión," which reflects the impact of the ongoing conflict caused by Russia in Ukraine.
In 2022, she held a major solo exhibition at Centre d’Art Taller Ivars in Benissa, showcasing the project "Place of Joy and Pain," which portrays both normal life and wartime realities, reflecting her search for transformation from reality to canvas. From 2018 to 2023, she taught children at Gudzgallery and continues to work there as an artist and director.
